Serene Wailua River & Fern Grotto Cruise

Enjoy a peaceful boat ride along Kaua‘i’s Wailua River, the state’s only navigable river, fed by the rains on Mt. Wai‘ale‘ale, one of the wettest places on Earth. This 2-mile journey offers fascinating insights into ancient Hawaiian culture, songs, and stories.

Glide along in a spacious open-air boat, taking in lush mangrove-lined riverbanks and stunning tropical scenery. The highlight of the trip is the enchanting Fern Grotto, a natural lava cave draped in soft ferns — a truly magical setting to experience the beauty and serenity of Kaua‘i.

Discover the Magical Fern Grotto

The Fern Grotto is a natural lava-rock cave adorned with lush hanging ferns and tropical plants, cooled by the gentle mist of a nearby waterfall. Once reserved exclusively for Hawaiian royalty, riverboat tours have delighted visitors for over 50 years, making this magical site accessible to everyone.

Its serene setting acts as a natural amphitheater, perfectly amplifying the beauty of Hawaiian music performed here. With its enchanting atmosphere, the Fern Grotto has become one of Kaua‘i’s most sought-after locations for wedding ceremonies and special celebrations.

Description

Explore the natural wonders of Kaua‘i with a tour that highlights the island’s most iconic sights and experiences.

Begin with the massive Waimea Canyon, affectionately known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” From the Waimea Canyon Lookout, take in the dramatic cliffs, bright greenery, and striking red soil of one of Hawai‘i’s most remarkable geological formations.

Coffee lovers won’t want to miss a visit to a Kaua‘i coffee plantation, where you can learn about the island’s unique coffee-growing climate and enjoy a tasting of fresh, locally produced coffee.

Next, marvel at ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls, a 151-foot-tall waterfall cascading into a hidden pool. Known for its “rolling shrimp” namesake, this accessible waterfall is one of the island’s most celebrated natural attractions. Stop in Old Kōloa Town for a bite to eat while exploring this historic community.

Witness the raw power of the Spouting Horn Blowhole, where waves surge through lava rock. According to Hawaiian legend, a giant lizard guarded these waters, keeping swimmers safe from harm — and adding a touch of mystery to this photogenic spot.

Take in sweeping views from the Hanapēpē Valley Lookout, first explored by Charles Wilkes in 1840. This lush valley, framed by rugged mountains, offers another unforgettable Kaua‘i panorama.

Relax on a narrated, two-mile open-air boat ride along the tranquil Wailua River, immortalized in Elvis’ Blue Hawai‘i. Arrive at the beautiful, serene Fern Grotto, a natural lava cave draped in ferns, serenaded by the Hawaiian Wedding Song — a magical, romantic highlight of the tour.

Join us for this full-day adventure and experience the extraordinary natural beauty, history, and culture of Kaua‘i’s Garden Isle!
